A power tiller is also known as rotavator
and rotary tiller which is a two-wheeled
agricultural implement, used for
ploughing the soil, sowing seeds, planting seedlings, adding fertilizers,
spraying fertilizers, herbicides, and water, pumping water, harvesting crops,
threshing crops, and transporting crops. All these additional tasks are
performed by attaching agricultural devices such as ploughs, seeders, pumps,
sprays, harvesters, threshers, and carriers to the power tiller.
Types of
Power Tillers
Power tillers
are available in three different sizes –
- Mini-sized Power
Tiller
These lightweight implements are good for vegetable and fruit farms, where the cultivation areas are small, the soil is relatively loose and does not require powerful tilling, and the crops are planted in narrow rows that need to be manoeuvred through without destroying them.
- Medium-sized
Power Tiller
These power tillers are suitable for farms where the soil is harder and rockier. These tillers are propelled forward by the spinning tines.
- Large-sized Power
Tiller
These power tillers are suitable for more extensive farm lands where there is sufficient space to manoeuvre the tiller as required. These tillers are propelled forward by the wheels and the spinning tines are positioned between the wheels.
To select the
right power tiller, farmers should consider the size of their land, the type of
soil, the amount of tilling necessary, the storage space they have for the
power tiller, and their budget for the power tiller.
Top Power
Tiller Brands
Most of the
power tillers are made by Indian and Chinese agricultural equipment
manufacturers. Some of the top Power Tiller brands are given below:
- Farmease
Power Tillers
- Fieldking
Power Tillers
- Kubota
Power Tillers
- Preet
Power Tillers
Most of these
power tiller manufacturers offer spare parts for their power tillers, and their
service technicians offer training in power tiller usage and maintenance and
also conduct power tiller repair work on site as and when it becomes necessary.
Benefits of Power Tiller
Farmers with
small and medium sized land-holdings are likely to find power tillers more
useful than tractors for the following reasons –
1. Power
tillers are less expensive than tractors, and the Indian government provides
subsidies to Indian farmers to purchase them.
2. Power
tillers require less room for storage.
3. Power
tillers consume lower fuel amounts than tractors. If a tractor require two
litres of diesel for an hour’s work, a power tiller can make do with one litre
in the same time.
4. Power
tillers have relatively low maintenance costs as compared to tractors.
